Early life

Hyunseung was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He has a younger sister called Geurim.[3].

Predebut

In 2004, at the age of 14, Hyun-seung took part in auditions for YG Entertainment. He was eliminated in the third round, but went to see CEO Yang Hyun Suk afterwards out of frustration at being eliminated and was accepted as a trainee.[4]

After 1 year and 4 months of training, Hyun-seung was made a member of YG's newest boy band, Big Bang. During this time, he used the stage name So-1, a homonym for the Korean word for wish. He first gained media attention when he appeared in the group's predebut Big Bang Documentary, along with members G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri. He appeared in 10 out 11 episodes, but was cut from the group in a final elimination round with Seungri. Yang Hyun-suk felt that Hyun-seung's expressiveness and stage presence were underdeveloped at the time. Fellow Beast member Yoon Doo-joon decided to become a singer after watching the Big Bang documentary featuring Hyun-seung.[5] He refers to his experience at YG as important to his development as an artist.[4]

Hyun-seung later met future fellow band member Yang Yo-seob while they were working as dancers for a show performance team. Yo-seob convinced Hyun-seung to join Cube Entertainment, leading to him debuting with Beast.[4]

Career

Beast

The group has released one Korean album, five Korean mini-albums and various singles. In December 2010, Hyun-seung teamed up with fellow member Lee Gi-kwang in a subunit to write and compose an R&B track as part of the band's digital album, My Story.

Trouble Maker

In December 2011, Hyun-seung formed a sub-unit with labelmate 4Minute's HyunA called Trouble Maker. Hyuna had previously released two singles, but both described the sub-unit as something different to either of their respective groups. The sub-unit was officially billed as 'JS & Hyuna', which Hyun-seung went on to reveal on his Twitter included his new stage name for the subunit, Jay Stomp.

Trouble Maker debuted with their self-named lead single and mini album Trouble Maker.[6] On November 25th, the unit started revealing teaser photos for the album, reavealing a private-party concept.[7] The duo also gave a teaser performance at the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards, which included an on-stage kiss. The album included the lead single "Trouble Maker" as well as the ballad "The Words I Don't Want to Hear".[8] The MV for "Trouble Maker" was released on December 1st.[9]

The duo's live performances of "Trouble Maker" on weekly music shows were criticized by the Korean media for their sexually suggestive choreography. In response, Cube Entertainment altered the choreography for the rest of the promotion period of "Trouble Maker".[10] The duo also performed "Trouble Maker" at the United Cube concerts in London and Brazil in December 2011.[11] Trouble Maker went on to win the triple crown on M.net M! Countdown for "Trouble Maker".[2]

Personal life

Hyun-seung currently attends at Dongshin University under a full scholarship, along with 4 other members of Beast.[12][13]
